Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1 and referred to officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship. F1 was first defined in 1946 by the Commission Sportive Internationale (CSI) of the FIA, forerunner of FISA, as the premier single seater racing category in worldwide motorsport. Malaysia started to hold a F1 Grand Prix since the year 1999, until now our country had held thirteen F1 Grand Prix consecutively. Thus, the effects of F1 are widely spread in our country.

From economy aspect, F1 had successfully promoted tourism in Malaysia as F1 fans from worldwide visited our country to watch the Grand Prix. Their expenses on food and beverage, accommodation, transportation had brings a lot of profits to our country due to the foreign exchange. The 1Malaysia F1 Team, which will debut in the World Formula One Championship next year, will further boost sports tourism in the country, (Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, 2009). Besides, organizing F1 Grand Prix had promoted the name of our country to the worldwide stage. Datuk Seri Azalina Othman (2008) says a survey conducted in 2008 shows that 80.8% of the international visitors surveyed came to Malaysia solely for the F1 event. Investors started to seek opportunities to set up their business empire in Malaysia. In short, F1 had boosted up the economy in Malaysia.

F1 used many innovative technologies to increase the car’s performance. F1 programme can create technology synergies and innovations which can be carried over to road car development (Theissen, 2008). F1 had so directly contributed to a technology destined for road use (Hanlon, 2007). Local car manufacturers learn those technologies and applied it in car manufacture process. The inspirations they get from F1 also encouraged them to come out with a better car design.

Infrastructure improvement is another major effect of F1. The construction of Sepang International Circuit and its ultramodern facilities had conferred it to be a famous track for many racing competitions. The track itself is great as it gives you a wide variety of possibilities during every lap (Schumacher, 2011). It’s also a track that produces good racing and there are some decent overtaking opportunities (Nielsen (2010). The improvement on public transportation such as the increase number of busses, better light rail transit (LRT) had facilitate both the tourists and local citizens. Other aspect such as the hotel and hospitality also had shown massive development.

Despite F1 had resulted certain level of air and sound pollution problem, but in overall, it had brings more positive effect to Malaysia. The improvement on economy, car manufacturing, and infrastructure aspect are undoubtedly advantages that our country received. In conclusion, F1 had brings numerous positive influences to Malaysia.
